How to make the SMR's work without a monitor

There is a need to make the SMR's easily usable when going outside DTU.

Demands:

  • Fast and robust boot of the Linux machine
  • To be able to monitor the progress in booting
  • Simple way of starting and stopping programs
  • Simple way to get the status of the SMR

Possible solutions:

Possibly interface:

  • USB Port (present on all current SMR's and probally the future)
  • LPT Port (present on all current SMR's but maybe not present in the future)
  • Serial Port (present but occupied by other equipment)
  • RS-485 Bus (Difficult to use during boot-up and suffer from high load)

Links to LCD display solutions: [1] USBLCD with open-source kernel-software and closed hardware. They have a module including a 20x4 STN Blue LCD for €55, about 400 Dkr. LCD displays is available from http://www.el-supply.dk and http://www.elsa.se/dk 20x4 cost about 160 Dkr - 240 Dkr.
