How to make the SMR's work without a monitor

There is a need to make the SMR's easily usable when going outside DTU.
Demands:
- Fast and robust boot of the Linux machine
- To be able to monitor the progress in booting
- Simple way of starting and stopping programs
- Simple way to get the status of the SMR
Possible solutions:
- IR remote control using lirc
- LCD display http://www.crystalfontz.com
- linuxbios
- button/LED interface for the parallel port
Possibly interface:
- USB Port (present on all current SMR's and probally the future)
- LPT Port (present on all current SMR's but maybe not present in the future)
- Serial Port (present but occupied by other equipment)
- RS-485 Bus (Difficult to use during boot-up and suffer from high load)
